Ok so this is a simple problem but if you haven't encountered it before it can be quite worrying.
The good news for all you homeowners is that it is not as urgent as you might think, your pipes are not going to explode and flood the house.
It is also a simple fix and shouldnt be expensive.
So what is the cause of this, and how do we cure it?
The cause is simply a worn diaphragm washer within the float valve which shuts the water off when the cistern fills. The warn washer vibrates and sends the vibrations down the pipework causing what is seemingly a disproportionate and startling noise.
The valve can be stripped down and the washer replaced, although it is not uncommon in todays throwaway society to just put a new valve in as it is quicker to do that than complete the repair.

You can lead a fool to wisdom, but you cant make him think!
