Popular in the 70's and early 80's for work in flats before sealed systems became the norm. Saved you having to stick an expansion tank on a shelf somewhere.

Same principle as a primatic (single feed) cylinder.
The spartan is fitted on the expansion or draw off of the cylinder using the connections on the side and the heating combined feed/vent is connected to the bottom of the spartan. There is an auto air vent on the bottom side to help create the airlock inside.

The heating fills through the domestic storage tank and separation is through an air bubble created by a part like an upside down bucket with a pipe up the inside, inside the spartan.
You drain the heating by turning the hot water off (no need to drain the cylinder).

They could be used on fully pumped systems as the connection is the neutral point.
