hi Simon,
if its your boiler and you are 'competant' you can do effectively as you wish.
Adding a thermostat and programmer is simple enough but it will have to meet with current regulations ie weather compensation & correct functioning as you are modifying the exsisting appliance,
Therefore although it is simple electrics the 'scope; lies with a gas registered person unless you meticulously follow current regs & are conversant with them.

yes theres a loop jumper in the mains circuit. download the manual and other wiring diagrams are in the programmer kit.
